If a proposal sponsored by the Division I Council is adopted next year, Division I schools could pay for parents or guardians of Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes to accompany their children on official recruiting visits.
The Football Recruiting Subcommittee of the now-defunct Division I Leadership Council initially recommended the proposal, which was presented to the Council by the Division I Football Oversight Committee. If adopted, it would become effective in summer 2016.
Schools already can fund these trips for parents of students who are prospective men’s and women’s basketball players.
The Council also agreed to sponsor legislation that would:
- Prohibit venues that allow sports wagering on college sports from having any association with certified events in women’s basketball.
- Make adjustments to the baseball recruiting calendar
- Require schools to meet the minimum contest and participants requirements for sport sponsorship to be eligible to enter a team or individual in NCAA track and field championships (indoor or outdoor).
NCAA member schools and conferences will have the opportunity to review and comment on the proposals over the next several months. The Council will take final votes on in April 2016.
