Newly constructed indoor tracks will require curbing

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Wednesday approved a rule, effective Dec. 1, 2018, requiring all newly constructed or resurfaced indoor tracks to be surveyed for a curb and to have regulation curbing in place for competition.

The curbing is being required to establish a consistent standard for indoor facilities and eliminate the constant speculation regarding the proper placement and maintenance of cones, as well as the officiating of the race.

The rule is an amendment to the current rule, which was originally passed in the summer of 2016. The original rule required all existing indoor facilities to have a curb by Dec. 1, 2018. The committee approved the amendment due to significant costs associated with installing a regulation curb to existing tracks.
