The endurance of Adams State

For the past two years, only a few points have separated the team champion from the runner-up at the Division II Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Last year, the Adams State University Grizzlies fell painfully short of the title, losing to Saint Augustine’s University by a mere 1.5 points. But this year, the Grizzlies landed on the other side of a tight margin, accumulating five more points than the second-place finishers to take home the title.

Bolstered by the strength of its distance runners, many of whom ran on last fall’s championship cross country team, Adams State finished with 45 points. The University of Findlay and Grand Valley State University, each with 40, shared the runner-up spot.

Adams State sophomore Oliver Aitchison won the one-mile run with a time of 4:09.39, and teammate Matt Daniels, a senior, followed in 4:09.69. Giving the team another distance victory, senior Kevin Batt took the 3,000-meter run title in 8:01.42. Batt and Aitchison also ran in the distance medley relay with teammates Derek Brown and Austin Anaya, a team that not only crossed the line first but also set a new NCAA Division II meet record.

This is the second Division II indoor track and field championship for the Adams State men.
